Smashing jQuery 1st first edition Text Only Jake Rutter Books

Smashing jQuery is a good jumpstart for people new to jQuery. It provides a good understanding of what jQuery is: how to get started using it, what sort of UI widgets are available and how they interact with page elements or create them.

After programming javascript extensively in years past I found my self programming again and jQuery was my tool of choice. I was not a newcomer to javascript but I was new to jQuery. This is the context of my view of Smashing jQuery.

The section on DOM scripting and how that relates to jQuery provided a bridge from my previous DOM programming in javascript. The discussion of scope and it's use in javascript were helpful in building my comfort level with library/framework coexistence.

The explanation/examples of jQuery use helped me link concepts that were familiar from directly programming the DOM in javascript to using jQuery much more simply to accomplish the same things. Building this bridge of knowledge was essential to reaching my initial jQuery comfort level.

Animating creating and modifying DOM objects were helpful examples of common jQuery UI use and the ajax section was also helpful in addressing dynamic in-page data updates. Some of the examples used simple css manipulations I would not have otherwise considered to accomplish an effect.

One of the best parts of the book for me was the section in the back covering a number of plugins. My favorite is the graphing one which turns a table of data into a graph or pie chart. Nice!

The book is printed on high quality paper with a fairly standard binding. I got the paper version because at the time I only had a B&W Kindle and it was clear the colorful illustrations would not translate well. The plesant physical experience of this book was an added bonus.

Now that I have established my comfort level with jQuery I get most of what I need online where there is ample documentation on most things jQuery. Getting over that initial speed bump in the learning curve is what Smashing jQuery accomplishes well for an experienced javascript programmer new to jQuery.

The errata may more of an issue for javascript newbies, but they were not so bad for me. The wiley web site has downloadble errata corrections.

The "bottom line" is Smashing jQuery is a good get-started book. People experienced with jQuery will probably not find a whole lot new here.

Smashing jQuery 1st first edition Text Only Jake Rutter Books Reviews

I was thinking for some time should i write a review for Jake Rutter' book on jQuery. The reason for my thinking was that some of the content in the book is really great(and i read a few jQuery books), but at the same time there were errors poping out all the time, so you must go back and forth the downloaded code and the book itself for examples to work. But in the end they do work, it is just that the code in the examples doesn't suffer from typos, as the code in the book does.

But putting errors aside, i really think Jake Rutter wrote a fine jQuery primer, with some very nice examples. I give the book 4 stars, which i think it really deserves.
I bought this item from EMANA BOOKS , It was great. It came in time and price was perfect. I will recommend to a friend to buy books from EMANA BOOKS.
I wanted to pick up a book on jQuery for quite some time and I decided to go for "Smashing jQuery" by Jake Rutter. Besides all the nice things I have heard and read about jQuery, I didn't have a clue about any of its capabilities. This book got me up to speed fairly quickly, but I reckon this is also partly due to the flat learning curve inherent to jQuery. After reading through the first three chapters I've come to realize how amazingly powerful this JavaScript library really is.

This book is very clear and useful for the new commers to jQuery. Now i am developing jQuery functions of my own and I am loving it.

The full credit goes to the author Mr. Jake Rutter! I am very happy to say that i am your fan now ) Applauds for you mate, you did Great work !!
Great content, lousy editing. Did the technical editor rush through this, or was he/she new to the subject? Talk about frustrating you are learning a new technical subject and your guide gives you erroneous info! LOVE the content, hate the errors. I guess the good news is that the errors really made me think. So here's a question with so many errors--and other reviews that point that out--why no errata page on the Wiley site? There is for Smashing CSS! Very strange.
This book provides a deep and thorough dive into the world of jQuery. For someone who has been hacking together things with the jQuery framework for a long while, it was refreshing to have some explanations and simple illustrations that brought everything together. I like that this book doesn't read like documentation - thought docs have their place - the way in which everything is explained is conversational, approachable and well stated. I came away with all my previous experiences hacking the jQuery framework now making sense, realizing places where I've done things incorrectly and feeling pretty pumped for my next project.

Smashing jQuery is a great introduction to those new to the framework and an exceptional review for those who've been working with it for a while. Ultimately it's the way in which the material is presented that makes it so useful. Rutter's conversational approach makes everything digestible and useful because that key component of understanding is so easily achieved.

Go make something. Then make it cooler, more useful and functional with jQuery.
